Om Nom Nom

stumbleupon:

Recently StumbleUpon’s New York office hosted an art show to spotlight NY artist Adia Millet. One big perk of working here is that we get to borrow art for a few months and then vote on which pieces to keep for the office! Pictured above are some shots of Adia’s art hanging on the walls in our NY office.

StumbleUpon also got the chance to sit down with Adia and ask her some questions about being an artist and where she gets her inspiration. Here’s that cool conversation:

SU: Hi Adia!  So when did you first discover your creative talents?

Adia: Very young. My best relationships as a child were with my art teachers. Along with my parents - they always encouraged me. As a teacher, I recognize an artist immediately… even if they’re only four years old.

SU: How would you describe your work - its style?

Adia: Meditative. Dark. Simple and very complicated at the same time. And hopefully timeless.

SU: How do you keep yourself motivated?

Adia: Great question. Making art keeps me “normal.” Some artists come up with ideas and hire someone else to make it for them. I’d say they’re motivated by making money and gaining notoriety. I’m simply seeking emotional beauty in unconventional places. I create spaces where our imaginations can escape to. That’s what makes me happy.

SU: How do you approach a new project?

Adia: Every project is connected to earlier projects. I begin with a set of ideas that I find myself thinking about all the time, like death, love, tradition, decay, childhood, etc. I connect the ideas to images, spend a lot of time thinking about my audience, and allow my intuition to have the final say.

SU: Who and/or what has inspired you, your art, and its form?

Adia: Joseph Beuys, David Hammons, Joseph Campbell, Lars Von Trier, mentors, my mom, psychology, nature, and architecture.

SU: Tell us something funny that has happened to you recently.

Adia: I just discovered that whenever I hula hoop, everyone laughs out loud.

SU: When did you first hear about StumbleUpon?  How often do you stumble?

Adia: I learned about it a few months ago and now I stumble about once a week. It’s inspiring!

SU: What are 5 words to describe yourself?

Adia: Honest, calm, attentive, unpredictable, hungry.

SU: And lastly, do you have any advice for aspiring artists?

Adia: Make art every single day, don’t be afraid of criticism, have a healthy, balanced ego.

SU: Thanks a lot Adia, and best of luck with your solo show this fall!
